Summer in Tokyo – Escape to the Beach

July 24, 2018

Spending a day swimming at the beach is a wonderful way to escape the heat and humidity of Tokyo’s summer. Suprisingly, Tokyo does has two beaches of its own. Special events, like beach volleyball tournaments, are held at Odaiba Beach and children play at the water’s edge. However, water quality is poor, which makes swimming … More Summer in Tokyo – Escape to the Beach

Kengun Jinja is Kumamoto City's oldest shrine, dating back over 1,450 years. It is located along one of the city's streetcar lines, a few stops from famous Suizenji Park (yesterday's post). The shrine is a local favorite during the New Year holiday season, but it is a peaceful oasis for the rest of the year. Be sure to look up at the ceiling of the shrine's impressive main gate. The hand-painted wooden squares are lovely, but easily missed. @excursions_japan #japan #kengunjinja #kumamoto #shrine
What I like best about Suizenji Jojuen, an impressive garden in Kumamoto City, is its grass-covered Mt. Fuji. This 'mini mountain' is especially lovely when framed by contrasting autumn leaves. If you visit the garden on a Saturday or Sunday, between 10am and 2pm, consider a guided tour - for only 500 yen per person. http://www.suizenji.or.jp/ilovepdf_com-1.jpg @excursions_japan #japan #kumamoto #garden #autumn #japanesegarden
On a visit to the city of Kumamoto, do not miss Suizenji Jojuen, a gorgeous garden that was originally the site of a tea house and temple built by the 3rd Hosokawa feudal lord in 1637. These days, there is a lot to see within the grounds: strolling paths around a spring-fed pond, two shrines, a historic home, a Noh theater, and this lovely tea house where you can enjoy matcha and a locally-made sweet while taking in one of the garden's best views. Access: The garden is a 15 minute street car ride from the city center. @excursions_japan #japan #kumamoto #garden #japanesegarden #autumn
On a recommendation by Mandy Bartok of Uncover Japan, I had a delicious lunch at Koi-no-shizuku in central Kumamoto. Down its own narrow alley, in what looks to have been a traditional Japanese home, Koi-no-shizuku is a wonderful oasis in the central shopping district. This set lunch of seasonal favorites, which I enjoyed in a tatami room overlooking a small garden, was only 1600 yen! @excursions_japan #japan #kumamoto #japanesefood #lunch
Kumamoto Castle will be under construction for many years - but don't let that stop you from visiting! Viewing both the damage and repair work is fascinating. And, the resilience and determination of the locals, faced with this daunting task, is inspiring. It was also quite warm and sunny on my recent visit. I always find the weather to be rather pleasant there! @excursions_japan #kumamoto #kyushu #castle #autumn
If you travel to Kumamoto Prefecture, be sure to spend one day sightseeing in the city. Although Kumamoto Castle was seriously damaged in the 2016 earthquake, it is still worth seeing - and the area is in great need of tourism spending. I was fascinated by the rebuilding/repairing process and was very impressed with all of the multilingual signs providing detailed explanations. @excursions_japan #japan #kumamoto #castle #japanesecastle #autumn
